Diwali also called as Dipawali is a Hindu festival which is celebrated every year to celebrate the victory of good over evil. There are many different legends one can hear across India as of why Diwali is celebrated. Diwali doesn’t have a particular fixed date, it usually falls in either October or November depending on the Hindu lunar calendar.
The most beautiful part of Diwali is lighting of diyas. Diyas are small shallow receptacles made of clay that hold purified butter, which in turn fuels the cotton wick within. Then the most interesting part, the crackers. Crackers is followed by family gatherings, gifts exchanges and enjoying home made good food. All in all having a great time with family and friends.
This year Diwali was celebrated on 7th of November. Here in Debrecen, we have organised a get together in front of Veres Peter Dormitory. With the kind permission of all the authorised people and Dr. István Komlósi, we could make the event a success. Around 100 students from India, Hungary and many other nations who belonged to different religions, cultures have attended the event and enjoyed a lot dancing and celebrating with us and made the event successful. We have arranged the diyas (as we could not get the traditional diyas here, we managed with the little candles), decorated the whole area with rangoli (designs made on floor with powder colours) and diyas and lights, we then performed Pooja (prayers) to goddess Lakshmi – goddess of wealth (Usually on Diwali we offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi), all of it are shown in the pictures below. We then offered Prasad (snacks on the name of god), which consisted of a traditional Indian sweet and a flat bread. Followed by the most interesting part of the celebrations – crackers. We fired crackers, played music had a nice dance session and ended the celebrations.

Diwali – a fény ünnepe
Diwali – vagy Dipawali – egy évente megrendezett hindu ünnep, a jó győzelme a gonosz felett. Eredetéről India szerte számos történet kering. Konkrét időpontja nincs, a hindu holdnaptártól függően októberben vagy novemberben tartják.
Az ünnephez szervesen hozzátartoznak a diya néven ismert, agyagba csomagolt vajat tartalmazó világító eszközök, továbbá a tűzijátékok, melyeket az ajándékozással és közös vacsorával egybekötött családi összejövetelkor használnak.
Idén a Veres Péter Kollégiumban mintegy 100 hallgató – indiaiak és más országbeliek vegyesen – ünnepelt együtt ezen alkalomból. A kollégium munkatársai és Dr. Komlósi István támogatásával megrendezett eseményen a diyákat szimbolizáló teamécsesek mellett rangolikat is megcsodálhattak az érdeklődők, majd a Laksmihoz történő ima és áldozás után tűzijátékkal, zenés-táncos mulatsággal zárult az este.
